If you'll continue having manager roles

Perhaps you're ready to create self-managing teams at the front line but want/need to keep a pyramid "above" them - because that feels like a challenge already or because your owners or board wouldn't allow you to go further.
Can that be done? And how would that work, a self-managing team reporting to a manager?
